Web & Multimedia
As coverage managing editor for The Muse, part of my job is to work with the web section to assign stories for web cycles, make sure content is being uploaded on the website, and manage other website tasks so that the website is up to date. I also work with multimedia often to make sure content is consistently being assigned, produced, and uploaded on to all of our different platforms.
Updating the Website
One of the main things I worked on with web at the beginning of the year was revamping the website to cater more to the look we wanted to go for this year. I was able to attend in-school SNO training where I got some ideas on how we could change the website to fit our needs more. I learned a lot from that training, and later that day, we were able to push out the new version of the website with much needed updates. We changed the masthead to update it for the year, redid the homepage to be wider and feature the pictures more, streamlined the sections we featured on the homepage, added a pop up of story recommendations on story pages, and other smaller changes that made big differences to the look of the website.
Interactive Elements
This year, we've started to put more emphasis on utilizing interactive elements in web stories to take more advantage of the web format. I've helped format foo galleries, photo slideshows, suggested the use of sidebars, and implemented Flourish charts and Spotify audio clips in web articles.
Revamping Multimedia
Last year, it felt like multimedia didn't get a lot of focus because it was a smaller section, so not much multimedia was produced. This year, since I was in the period with multimedia and they are a bigger section now, I wanted to sit with the multimedia editor and figure out a way we could revamp multimedia and start producing more content. We redid how deadlines worked for multimedia, what the draft cycle would look like, and came up with a multimedia calendar to make sure content was getting posted regularly. Being a big change, sometimes there are flaws in the new system, like content still not getting produced or drafts being late, but overall we've been able to get much more content uploaded both on the website and on our other platforms (Instagram, YouTube, and Spotify).
